What is cat sudoku?
"Cat sudoku" is what many players call puzzles like Meowdoku. The board is a square grid cut into colored regions. You place one cat in every row, one in every column and one in every color region, and no two cats may touch, not even diagonally. If you have ever tried Queens or Star Battle puzzles, you will feel at home: the cats simply take the place of the queens or stars.
Like sudoku, every puzzle has exactly one solution and you never need luck. You only need to notice what must be true, one step at a time.
How is it different from regular sudoku?
- Few pieces, big thinking. Sudoku fills every cell with a digit. Cat sudoku places only one cat per row, column and region, so a 9×9 board has just nine cats.
- Colors instead of boxes. The regions have irregular shapes, and spotting how they overlap with rows and columns is the heart of the puzzle.
- No numbers. You do not need to do any counting or arithmetic, which makes it friendly for beginners and quick to play on a phone.
- The no-touching rule. Cats cannot be neighbors, even diagonally. That one rule creates most of the deductions.
How to play cat sudoku
- Tap a cell once to mark it with an ×, meaning there is no cat here.
- Tap it again to place a cat.
- Use the × marks to rule out cells, and look for the only place left for each cat.
- When every cat is placed and none clash, you win.
